Built in 1859, The Melbourne General Post Office is a landmark building the stands on the corner of Elizabeth and Bourke street in the heart of Melbourne’s central business district. It houses a clock tower and sports a Second Empire styled mansard roofline. The plans for this building never were quite finished as authorities continued to extend it. This interior sorting hall was redesigned between 1907 and 1919. The building was gutted by a fire in 2001, and has since been restored to now serve as an upmarket shopping centre as postal facilities were moved to buildings both north and south of this building. Distances from the centre of Melbourne are still measured from the GPO.
