Great Alpine Highway

The lovely thing about driving around in New Zealand is that you can cover a lot of the country in fairly good time. This shot was taken towards the end of my trip there in 2009. I had spent the previous couple of days on the West Coast in the little township outside the Franz-Joseph glacier.

After spending the morning flying up to the Franz-Joseph glacier in a helicopter, and not being particularly mobile (I’d twisted my ankle a couple of days earlier and was very slowly on the mend), I decided to drive back to Christchurch.

Its a mere 5 hours to drive from one coast to the other, as I found my way past Hokitika, Greymouth and Arthur’s Pass back into Cantebury. Somewhere along the way on this drive, I came across this little stretch of road that broke the monotony (dare I say it) of the beauty of the South Island’s Great Alpine Highway.

I have since pledged to return… and every year, I keep my fingers crossed in the hopes to make it happen once again!
