Preparing to shoot in the cold
A few days ago, I was talking to a friend who was considering a doing photo shoot in a place where it is snowing very heavily right now. Being an individual with fairly low tolerance to the cold, he was interested in how I prepared to shoot in cold weather.
While I am fortunate to have a (somewhat unnatural) resistance to the cold, I still make sure I take a few precautions while shooting in cold weather. The following are my tips for dealing with cold weather in a photoshoot.
- The most important rule is to never shoot on an empty stomach. When possible, always eat a hearty meal before heading out. You will find that when the body has fuel, it deals with the cold a lot better than when its running on empty.
- Keep your nerve endings warm – wear a good pear of insulated boots, and ensure that you keep them dry. Also, keep your head and ears covered at all times. For gloves, consider a lighter fingerless pair inside heavier full fingered gloves.
- Keeping warm is a bit of a learnt art. Consider investing in some pocket warmers.
- When possible, seek a windbreak as your vantage point to shoot from.
- Be wary of changes in temperature for your equipment, especially when going from a cold environment to a warm environment. This causes condensation on lenses and the inner parts of your camera. When you finish shooting outdoors, and come in-doors to a warm environment, be sure to open your SLR up and allow the lenses and the body enough time to dry out.
